Intro to Bladesmithing

Ever wanted to make your own knife from scratch? In this two-day weekend class at my NE Portland forge, you'll do exactly that — from raw steel to finished blade, every step done by your own hands. The Intro to Bladesmithing class is designed for anyone who wants to learn the full process of crafting a functional, durable knife, whether you've never touched an anvil or already have some forging experience under your belt.

What you'll learn:

  • Proper forging techniques and tool use

  • Steel types, alloys, and materials selection

  • Blade design and geometry

  • Forging a blade profile and bevel

  • Grinding and finishing techniques

  • Heat treating — hardening and tempering

  • Handle shaping and fitting

Over the two days you'll forge, grind, heat treat, and finish an EDC-style knife with a 4 to 4.5 inch blade and a wooden handle — a simple but durable "brut de forge" style blade built to be carried and used. You'll leave with a knife you made entirely yourself and the knowledge to understand every decision that went into it.

Classes are kept to a maximum of 2 students, so instruction is focused and hands-on throughout both days. All materials and safety equipment are provided — just show up ready to work.
