Intro to Blacksmithing

Curious about blacksmithing but not ready to commit to a full day at the forge? This weekday evening class is the perfect way to get your hands on hot steel for the first time. In just 1.5 hours at my NE Portland shop, you'll learn the fundamental techniques that every blacksmith builds on — and you'll leave with something you made yourself.

What you'll learn:

  • How to work safely in a forge environment

  • Proper hammer technique and body mechanics

  • How to create a taper

  • How to punch a hole in hot steel

  • How to twist hot steel

By the end of the class you'll have forged your very own J-hook from start to finish — a simple project that teaches the core skills of the craft in a short amount of time.

Classes are kept small — no more than 2 students — so you get real one-on-one instruction time at the anvil, not just a demonstration. No experience necessary. All materials and safety equipment are provided.
