Blacksmithing basics and fundamentals
Ready to spend a full day at the forge? The Blacksmithing Basics class is a deep dive into the fundamentals of blacksmithing — a hands-on, full day of instruction at my NE Portland shop where you'll work through multiple projects and build a real foundation in the craft. If you've been curious about blacksmithing and want more than just a taste, this is the class for you.
What you'll learn:
Shop safety and forge operation
Proper hammer technique and body mechanics
Tool use and selection
Drawing out and tapering steel
Scrolling and bending
Decorative detailing
Throughout the day you'll work through three projects — an S-hook, a J-hook, and a leaf pendant or keychain — each one building on the skills from the last. By the end of the day you'll have a solid grasp of the core techniques and three finished pieces to take home.
Classes are kept small — no more than 2 students — so you get focused, hands-on instruction throughout the entire day rather than waiting around for your turn at the anvil. No prior experience necessary. All materials and safety equipment are provided.
